SINGLEHOOD

Singlehood is often viewed as people who chose to remain single than to be married. As there are an increasing number of people who chose to be single, single hood has become one of the greater concerns in the society.

Single hood can actually bring about many consequences. But firstly, why do the adults nowadays chose to be single than to be married? There are several reasons explaining why this is so.

It could be due to the fact that women nowadays are treated as equally as the men. They are granted higher education n more opportunities for them to work in the society. Thus, they have become much more independent compared to the past whereby women are often dependent for men for a living. Since they are more independent nowadays, they no longer see the need to be married n thus choose to be single.

It could also be due to the fact that the people nowadays are afraid of carrying the marriage burden such as the need to support the family, take care of them or even to be tied down by marriage and unable to participate in certain activities with their friends. As the people nowadays often ask for more rights and freedom, marriage may be seen by the individuals as restricting one’s freedom and thus they may choose not to get married, contributing to the increase in singles in the world.

These are just one of the few reasons why people do not want to get married.

However, there are also many advantages of getting married.

Firstly, when people get married, they have assured themselves that they will have a lifelong companion when they are who will be by their side all the time, taking care of them and vice versa. This helps to kill time when they are bored and will not feel lonely all the time.

Secondly, in countries such as Singapore for it faces slow population growth problems, Singapore promotes families to have more babies through various schemes, one of which is the subsidies and priorities given to family with more than 2 children in certain government system. Thus, as married couples are most likely to have babies, married couples were then given higher priority for certain government systems.

There are still many other benefits which I have not mentioned.

What are the possible consequences of single hood? As most of the people in the country are single, birth rate may drop drastically. Slow population growth and ageing population may occur, leading to more problems such as decreased attractiveness to investors due to unproductive workforce and even threaten the country’s national security.

Above are the few disadvantages, advantages and consequences that I have identified. Judging from the case, the singles are more likely to lead a life less happy than the married people for the married people gets to enjoy their life more such as family love, and concern for children and in the case when they grew old, filial piety. Thus it proves that married couples are more likely to experience a much more fruitful life than the singles, thus much more happy. However, whether single or married is a better choice in the society differs from person to person basis. It depends on how the individuals view the case and what priority they are setting for themselves between career, or family itself.
