Is homosexuality a blessing or a curse? The answer varies among various groups of people. For the homosexuals themselves, they strongly believe that it is a blessing as they, like the normal people, found their life long partner. However, for the other groups, homosexuality is a curse and should be ban as it may bring harm to the others. For me, I believe it is a curse and I believe that they should not be abolise the penal code 377A.
Homosexuals are people who are attracted to the same-sex partners. Like handicaps, they lack a certain type of genes which causes their sexual attractions unable to function like the "straight" people. This sexual orientation is caused by the complex interaction between a number of genes and the environment. However, homosexual behaviour, regardless of ones sexual orientation, and voluntary and subject to control by ones own will. Thus it can be said that they are not homosexuals at birth.
Homosexuals, like heterosexuals, desires sex and intimacy and will act on them naturally. And due to this, they are often being subjected to discrimination or violence by the "straight" people due to the unmorally behaviours by homosexuals. However such "unmorally" behaviour is not really due to moral values, but rather discrimination towards homosexuals. For example in Singapore, section 377, which criminalises unnatural sex such as sodomy and fellatio, was repealed and was changed to a crime which criminalises sex with dead bodies. Through this, it can be seen that sex between homosexuals are labelled as "unmoral" while heterosexuals who committed such acts are still considered "moral". Thus, this shows discrimination as unnatural sex between two different parties shows two different view points. So my question is, is unnatural sex itself are considered 'gross intimacy' and are morally wrong , or is it that sex between homosexuals are considered 'gross intimacy' and morally wrong? And if the later is true, what makes it so different from unnatural sex between heterosexuals counterparts?
I believe that same-sex marriages should not be accepted into the society as they are the main causes of Sexually Transmitted Diseases(STD) such as AIDS. From references, AIDS are originally called the "gay disease". In June 2004, it is reported that sex between men are nine times more likely to be infected with HIV than heterosexuals counterparts. In 2003, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in the United States reveled that 63% of HIV infections came through sexual contact with other men. Also in 1998, 54% of all AIDS cases in the United States were homosexual men. In 2004, a group of University of Chicago researches revealed that 87.8% homosexuals have more than 15 partners and 61.3% had more than 30 partners in Chicago. This shows that the AIDS cases is mostly caused and spread through sex between men, and if Singapore is to abolish the penal code 377A and allow same-sex marriages, the number of HIV infections will also increase like that in the States, causing more harm than good to the society. Thus it shows the reason why the penal code 377A is set up and should not be change to protect the welfare of the people in the society.
The legalisation of same-sex marriages will cause the country to suffer in the hands of STDs as well as to corupt the mindset of "straight" people that the previous section 377 is morally right. For those who thinks that abolising the penal code 377A will not have great impact on the society, think again. To end, I strongly believe that the penal code 377A should be kept and that homosexuality is a curse.
