HOMOSEXUALITY: BLESSING OR –> {CURSE} <--
Homosexuality, frequently defined as the sexual behavior or attraction between people of the same sex, has become an issue of concern in Singapore. In the past, mention the word “homosexuality” and people may not be familiar with the term or even know its meaning. Especially traditional Chinese families, homosexuality probably is not even spoken or better yet, thought off. Traditionally, the Chinese families would match make their own children preferably to a spouse (of an opposite sex) belonging to better-off families. However, times have changed and homosexuality has now become increasingly common relative to the olden days, sparking a need to take a closer look at the issue. In my opinion, I am compelled to take on the stand that homosexuality is a curse, a misfortune to both themselves and the society as well.
One of the first things that comes to mind when considering homosexuality is its effects on society and the general public. The rising number of homosexuals has been said to aggravate the problem of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like syphilis and gonorrhea. According to the International Organization of Heterosexual Rights, studies have shown that homosexuals account for 3-4% of all gonorrhea cases, 60% of all syphilis cases, and 17% of all hospital admissions (other than for STDs) in the United States. On the surface, it may not seem like it would affect other heterosexuals (sexually oriented to persons of the opposite sex) since the STDs would only be transmitted amongst the homosexuals themselves. However, to much shock and astonishment, of the homosexuals questioned in one study reports that 43% admit to 500 or more partners in a lifetime, 28% admit to 1000 or more in a lifetime, and of these people, 79% say that half of those partners are total strangers, and 70% of those sexual contacts are one night stands. Their (Homosexuals) promiscuous behaviour would increase the rate of transmission of STDs to an unimaginable level. This clearly illustrates the huge risk and chances of contracting an STD even with one of the opposite sex. That is not the end. Innocent children, who will eventually be the future of a country, the fruits of their parents upbringing and nurture, could be at risk of sexual harassment or even assault! This is definitely a cause for concern! Studies from the American Psychiatric Association have stated that homosexuals commit more than 33% of all reported child molestations in the United States, which, assuming homosexuals make up 2% of the population, means that 1 in 20 homosexuals is a child molester, while 1 in 490 heterosexuals is a child molester. According to a book on gays, a staggering 73% of all homosexuals have had sex with boys under 19 years of age. Placing ourselves in a parent’s shoes, surely we would not desire to see our children falling victims to these scums. Children tend to be the utmost concern for most parents. Being concerned, parents would not wish to see their children being affected not just physically but psychologically as well. Hence, it is without doubt that homosexuals pose as a health threat both to the society and themselves.
From the financial aspect in Singapore, if Singapore were to accept and acknowledge homosexuality, would it really be beneficial to the economy of Singapore? Some may say that Singapore’s tourism may increase due to the increase in influx of homosexuals for various reasons like recreation and entertainment like clubbing. However, will tourism really increase or would the increase in tourism be significant enough to boost the economy? Perhaps, the case could be quite the opposite, that Singapore’s economy may suffer because of its acceptance of homosexuality. This may be because many of the conservative tourists could choose not to visit Singapore anymore for fear of rising STD and HIV cases if the problem becomes rampant. Besides, tourism is only one of the many revenues of income. Singapore’s economy would be affected by many other issues. Looking from the prospective of health, if the STD and HIV problems were aggravated, the cost of healthcare may subsequently increase as the demand for treatment of STDs and screening tests increase. This would increase the strain on the government to maintain the affordability and quality of healthcare. Furthermore, in view of a possible aging population in Singapore, would it be wise to put more pressure on the area of healthcare since healthcare and welfare firms would be confronted with more cases dealing with aging problems? Therefore, it is highly questionable as to whether Singapore’s economy would benefit by accepting homosexuality as a social norm.
Some may deem Mardi Gras, a festival that celebrates the prevalence of homosexuals and the like, as a ray of hope or blessing for homosexuals. On the other hand, the degree of acceptance is still limited. How much of it is really a blessing? True, they may obtain recognition and fame, but in reality they still cannot escape the undeniable fact that they still face discrimination and the curse of not having children of their own flesh and blood. In my opinion, this celebration of homosexuality is just a facade, a deceptive front and attempt to prove to others that they are widely accepted and a ticket to allow them to escape the bleak reality of an inevitable curse that they may not accept. Even the phrase, “sexual orientation” is said to be coined by homosexuals to try to make themselves look less filthy than they really are. The definition of this phrase has no mention and has nothing to do with any sexual activity, but only refers to who or what a particular person is attracted to. The purpose of the phrase is to take the spotlight from what these perverts do, and put it on the notion that they are just poor, mistreated people, who simply are attracted to members of the same sex. Therefore, it is dubious that homosexuals are really innocent and “clean” as some of them may have claimed.
In conclusion, I would like to reaffirm my stand that homosexuality is a curse to the people themselves, the society or both. By acknowledging and legally accepting homosexuality as a norm, it would sprout various issues of concern and problems in both short term and long term in many diverse aspects, some resolvable while others may never be resolved. Homosexuality may prove to be one of the many trials of humanity and how much we may accept and acknowledge them as part of life will change, whether for good or for worse.
